Have you had trouble with finding a rental property? Over three million pets were given up to shelters because their owners couldn’t find a pet friendly property. Here’s a tip for renting with pets; bring a letter of reference from your previous landlord stating that you are a responsible pet owner. And watch this film for more advice.
Step 1:
Statistics
For the millions of pet owners who rent finding pet-friendly accommodations can be a frustrating experience. It's almost always the pets who suffer the most. According to the National Council on Pet Population, 3.6 million pets were given up to shelters last year because their owners couldn't find pet-friendly homes.
Step 2:
Renting Restrictions
Many apartment or complexes have weight restrictions and large pet deposits. "The main thing I had to do was just keep calling the ads that would say they were pet-friendly. And even the ones that were pet-friendly, if you told them you had more than one dog, most of them wouldn't talk to you."
Step 3:
Search For Pet-Friendly Accommodation
So how do you find pet-friendly housing? Step one is to do an Internet key word search like, "pet-friendly rentals" in your new area. Or you can contact a realtor who'll have condos and apartments set up for rent that are pet-friendly.
Step 4:
Additional Tips
If a landlord is uneasy about renting to you because of your pets, here are some tips. Give them a letter of reference from your current landlord verifying that you're a responsible pet owner. Include documentation that your pet has been spayed or neutered and are vaccinated against rabies. If you have a well-behaved dog, offer to bring the pooch in for a face-to-face meeting. Offer the landlord a larger-than-usual deposit. In many cases, money talks. Moving should never mean having to give up your family pet. After all, they're part of the family.
