Any responsible and loving pet owner will naturally not want his or her pet dog to be run over by any car or vehicle. As much as possible, this pet owner will do anything in his or her ability to prevent something untoward to happen to the pet dog. After all, that owner has done everything he can in his power so that his pet would be safe. And if something untoward happens to his pet - like it being run over by a car - it would be quite difficult for him to accept it.
There are actions that an owner can do to prevent the dog from being run over or hit by a car. There are concrete exercises that can be performed as well, and into each exercise, the owner must be able to put in some serious work and effort. Do not forget that dogs would always love to go and be outside. And that is something that you should keep in mind when you would like to train your dog not to go wandering outside alone so that he would not get hit by any vehicle or any car.
First, you have to give your best in keeping the animal inside the home. You can tell your pet to sit down patiently and just wait for you every time that you are near the door. They can go near the door at a set limit or distance that you have set. The animal should not pass or get over the distance limit if you did not allow it to do so. Ensure that the entire household is briefed or oriented on this rule and that they also follow it. If everyone abides by the rule, the animal will be able to clearly understand that it can only go near the door at the proper distance.
Be sure to give the dog its treat or reward for sitting down and patiently waiting. This can inculcate in the dog's mind that it should not go out each and every time it sees an open door and they will remain safe and secure indoors. It would also mean that you would have peace of mind knowing that your dog would not wander by itself outdoors.
You can also leash train your pet dog to ensure that it stays safe at home. When on leash, make sure that you do not permit the dog to pull you ahead while you are on a walk. You and the animal must walk by each other's side and not the dog ahead of you. Do not let the animal sniff at anything while walking, most especially during the first fifteen minutes of the walk. When the fifteen minutes have concluded, allow it to sniff in order to make it think that such permission is a reward for the behaved walk. Do not let the dog cross the street without permission from you and you should train it to wait for you on any corner or around curbs.
