Certain breeds of dogs which may be kept as pets can serve as sources of personal protection with proper training, but there is limit in terms of what you can expect from them. Dogs may deter an attacker who is waiting for an opportunity or put off a paparazzi. For an attacker who is committed, and has a pre-attack plan and has even performed a rudimentary surveillance on his target, the dog is quickly and easily dispatched as the attack starts. Hence it is important to note that dogs are wholly reactionary in that they are trained to attack and at times, only on command. This means that a dog cannot create the needed source of protection and cannot replace an executive protection specialist.

Personal protection dogs are expected to protect the family by snarling, jumping, chasing and seizing, not by seriously injuring, killing or biting. A good trainer of personal protection dogs should teach them to exhibit defensive aggression and train them on excellent control work while they remain friendly and most sociable dogs. If the dog's owner or family member feels threatened, they can give the dog a silent command just to show what appears as major aggression. This may be enough to discourage people intending to harm the owner or a family member.

Dogs that are being bred with the intention of them becoming personal protection dogs should also be bred while enhancing their confidence through having good drive for prey or defense, with solid nerves, stable characters and the physical ability for the job. The dogs do not really need to be active. There is no harm if the dogs keep lying down, being calm and with an easy going demeanor. They also do not require a high level of prey drive although this may be helpful in early stages of training and in protecting levels of stress. Defense drive is crucial and while the dog should be less forward, it should offer more protection in presence of strangers.

Some of the breeds that are suitable for personal protection include Boxers Doberman Pinschers. They also love to have fun with children and adults but wary with strangers while they seem to have the ability to read peoples intentions and characters. Doberman Pinschers offer the protection instinctively, may use their teeth in defense and will alert the owner of suspicious activities.
