A dog's nose not only dominates his face, but his brain as well. In fact, the canine brain has 40 times more of his brain devoted to his sense of smell than humans do! With that kind of ability it's no wonder we train dogs to search for drugs, locate disaster survivors and even to detect human illnesses, from epilepsy to cancer. So, with these super sensitive snouts, there isn't a more appropriate treatment to pamper and nurture those special creatures than aromatherapy!

WHAT IS AROMATHERAPY AND HOW DOES IT ELEVATE THE WELL-BEING OF OUR PETS? Aromatherapy is the practice of using volatile plant oils, known as essential oils, for psychological and physical well-being. The essential oils are extracted from plants and are all natural. Essential oils and aromatherapy can be used to prevent disease, reduce pain and anxiety and they can induce relaxation. Although the term "aromatherapy" was not used until the 20th century, the foundations date back thousands of years. The trend toward natural health consciousness in humans is now gaining popularity in the animal world too!

Aromatherapy for dogs is the therapeutic use of 100% pure oils for holistic treatments of physical and behavioral problems in pets such as separation anxiety & excessive barking. The oils, which are specifically diluted for use with dogs, provide immediate, profound and long lasting results on the animals overall health and well-being.

Aromatherapy for dogs can work on several levels and on a variety of conditions. The essential oils can be applied topically via massage to treat skin problems like excessive itching, hot spots, ear infections, cuts and many other issues. Essential oils also can be added to shampoos and conditioners for a rich therapeutic bath. These oils will not only infuse the air, but they will also nourish the skin.

Aromatherapy can be used in spritzers or sprays like lavender oil, to reduce anxiety and induce relaxation. Essential oils can be utilized to control pet odors and to purify the air from dander and allergens. For example, mix 50 drops of lemon essential oil in a 2oz spray bottle filled with water. Shake very well and spray the room. You'll notice that it refreshes and cleanses the air!

Aromatherapy for dogs can provide pain relief from arthritis by using an anti-inflammatory essential oil blends such as "Arf-Ritis" by Aromadog. This special blend of essential oils will target stiff joints, increase the circulation and help detoxify the body. The scent of the oils will create a calm state of mind which will be associated with the positive experience of the message and human touch which all pets need and crave.

Oral application of essential oils to pets should be done by a holistic veterinarian only, as some are not suitable for ingestion. In addition, oils should not be used on puppies, pregnant dogs or on dogs who suffer from seizures. Essential oils that are suitable for canines may not be beneficial to cats and vice-versa. Flea and tick medication can be toxic to your pet and some dogs may experience short term side effects which include skin irritation, vomiting and diarrhea. Some more serious side effects that can occur are seizures and even death. Aromatherapy can be used as a natural way to treat your pets against fleas and ticks. Try these safe oil blend recipes to treat your pets naturally instead of using harmful chemicals.

Since humans have been practicing aromatherapy techniques for hundreds of years and we have reaped the benefits, why not spread that knowledge onto other creatures, such as our pets? Aromatherapy is not magic and it isn't a miracle cure. It is, simply put, a natural health care option. It is something that needs to be practiced continuously and over time to develop and maintain results.
