So you just brought your new puppy home and you get them all excited and then it happens. Your new puppy has just peed on your living room floor! With such a young dog things like this should be expected but that doesn't mean you have to live with it for long. If you have children in the household you should also teach them how to correctly take the dog out. In fact, the sooner you teach them where it's ok to go potty, the easier your life will be. Follow these simple steps to solve your problem.

Before I give a few tips I always like to stress that you should never punish your puppy by hitting them. This is the wrong way to train a dog. Even after your puppy is trained there will still be a rare "accident" and you shouldn't scold them because of it.

Tip #1 - Choosing Where

Choose a place for your puppy to go potty and stick to it. Consistency is key when you are training a dog. This is one of the most common mistakes new dog owners make. It will make your life very difficult if you don't use this tip.

Tip #2 - Choosing a Command

Make sure to use the same simple command when teaching your puppy. Something simple like "go potty" will work just fine. Being consistent with it will help your dog associate the command with what they're suppose to try and do.

Tip #3 - Set a Schedule

Start by taking your puppy to the area where you want him to go potty every hour. You won't have to do this very long before your puppy realizes that they can hold it until you take them out again. After a few weeks your puppy will probably start standing by the door when they need to go.

Tip #4 - Praise

Praise your puppy when they do things correctly. Give them a treat so that they associate where they went potty and the command that you used. This will also speed up the potty training process. By following these simple tips I'm positive that you will have a well trained puppy in just a few short weeks. I hope these tips will help you get started with your new puppy. Always remember to be consistent and in no time at all you will have a well trained puppy that you can be proud of.

You can use puppy training pads to help your new puppy learn where it is acceptable to go potty. If you want to learn a great way to housebreak a puppy you can read some great information on my site.
